About Dewkeep — how it works

Dewkeep is a free browser virtual pet with no account and no download. You keep one small creature in a glass terrarium, a minute or two a day, and the world it lives in slowly fills in around it. It opens in a tab and it is playable in about ten seconds.

What is this?

Dewkeep is a free virtual pet that lives in your browser. There is no account and no download — open the page and your creature is there. It lives in a small glass terrarium and has three needs that drift down on the real clock, so it notices how long you have been away. Keep it thriving and the terrarium slowly fills in with moss and plants: the world itself becomes the record of your care. Your pet is saved on your device, not on a server, and nothing about it is ever sent anywhere.

You look after one original creature — a small, mossy, wide-eyed thing living under glass — by keeping three needs topped up. It is not a game you win. There is no score, no leaderboard, no timer counting down to a failure state, and there is no way to lose the creature.

It is built for people who want a thirty-second ritual rather than another thing demanding attention: open it with your coffee, tap twice, close the tab. The reward for coming back is that the terrarium itself grows. Moss spreads, a fern uncurls on the back glass, and much later a piece of driftwood settles into the peat. Those pieces are permanent — once earned, nothing removes them.

How to play

1. Name your creature. The name is stored on your device only. It is never uploaded, never shown on a share image, and never appears in a link.

2. Watch the three needs. Fed empties over about 20 hours, Watered over about 14, and Rested over about 30. They drain on the real wall clock, whether the tab is open or not — closing the tab changes nothing.

3. Use the three care actions. Feed restores a good chunk of Fed, Water restores rather more of Watered, and Settle puts the creature to sleep, which refills Rested over roughly six hours while the other two drain more slowly. Waking it is one tap.

4. Come back tomorrow. Every day you check in and the creature is not dormant counts as a thriving day. Thriving days do two things: they grow the creature through five stages — Spore, Shoot, Frond, Bloom, Elder — and they unlock the sixteen pieces of terrarium, starting with a cushion of moss on day one and ending with a trailing vine at 365.

Tips

• Water is the need that runs out first. If you only have time for one tap, make it that one.
• An action greys out when the matching need is already above 85. That is not an error — the creature simply is not hungry yet, and topping up early wastes nothing but your time.
• Settle before you close the tab overnight. Rest refills while the creature sleeps, so you wake up to one fewer thing to fix.
• Missing a day costs you a thriving day, not a piece of terrarium. Nothing you have already earned can be taken away.
• Milestones are counted in thriving days, not calendar days, so the terrarium is an honest record of how often you actually showed up.
• Copy your export code before you clear your browser data, switch devices, or reinstall.

Coming back after a while

The needs decay while you are away — that is the honest part, and it is the whole reason a daily visit means anything. What does not happen is a punishment. There is no screen that counts the days you missed, no meter of debt to work off, and nothing you earned is ever taken back.

Come back after a day and the creature is awake and plainly wanting something; the two needs that matter are the ones pushed forward, and two taps fixes it. Come back after a fortnight and you will find it curled up asleep with the whole terrarium you grew still around it, intact and lit. One action wakes it, gently, and it is itself again within a couple of minutes. Any milestones your thriving days had earned in the meantime arrive at once, as you open the page.

Is Dewkeep free?

Yes. It is free to play in your browser and supported by ads. There is nothing to buy and no premium version.

Do I need an account or a download?

No. There is no sign-up, no email, no app to install. Open the page and start.

Where is my pet saved?

On your own device, in your browser’s local storage. It is not sent to a server. Clearing your browser data will clear your pet, so use the export code to back it up or move it to another device.

What happens to my pet while I’m away?

Its needs drift down on the real clock, so it will be hungrier when you come back. It cannot die — if it is left long enough it goes dormant, and caring for it wakes it up.

Is this a game for children?

It is made for adults who like quiet, low-pressure games. It collects no personal data from anyone.

Can my creature die?

No. There is no death state and no way to lose it. Sustained neglect makes it curl up and go dormant, which takes all three needs sitting at zero for a continuous 48 hours, so a weekend away will not do it. A dormant creature keeps its entire terrarium, and a single care action wakes it up.

How do I move it to another device?

Export a code and paste it in on the other device. The code is a short string generated and read entirely in your browser; importing always asks you to confirm before it replaces an existing pet.

Does it keep running when the tab is closed?

Yes. Needs are worked out from timestamps, so an hour away is an hour away whether you watched it or not.

What if I change my clock or fly somewhere?

Everything is measured in UTC, so travel and daylight saving make no difference. Setting the clock backwards does nothing at all, and jumping it forward will not earn you unlocks you have not waited for.

Your data, ads and contact

Dewkeep stores your pet — its name, its needs, its day count and its terrarium — in your own browser’s local storage. That is the only copy. There is no account, no server save, and no way for us to read it: the name you choose is never uploaded, never put in a link, and never drawn on a share image.

The site is free and is supported by display advertising. Ads run beside the scene, never over it — you will never dismiss an ad to reach your creature. Google’s certified consent tool handles cookie choices in regions that require it, and advertising and analytics cookies stay off unless you allow them. No pet data of any kind is passed to an ad or an analytics call. The full detail is in the privacy policy.
